Golf simulator room size: what your ceiling, width and depth allow
Golf simulator room size comes down to three numbers: ceiling, width and depth. As a starting point, a full swing usually needs about 9 ft of ceiling, 10 ft of width and 15 ft of depth; player height, swing, mat, overhead hardware and the launch monitor model all move those numbers. Enter your own three numbers below. This page then works out what you can swing, whether a left-hander can share the room, and which launch monitor type your depth allows.
The calculator runs in your browser and nothing is emailed. If you copy the share link below, your room measurements are part of that link, so anyone you send it to can read them.

What do these three numbers decide?
Ceiling decides whether you can swing at all. Depth decides which launch monitors are available to you at all. Width decides whether a left-hander can share the room without moving anything. The table below runs five common rooms through the same thresholds this calculator uses.
| Room | Ceiling | Width | Depth | What it allows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard garage | 8 ft | 10 ft | 20 ft | Short game only. After a mat and an enclosure, roughly 7 ft 6 in of swing height is left. |
| Tall garage | 9 ft | 12 ft | 20 ft | Passes this calculator's full-swing threshold for a player under 6′2″, one side only, either launch monitor type. The driver will feel tight. |
| Finished basement | 9 ft | 14 ft | 16 ft | Passes the full-swing threshold for a player under 6′2″, either hand, camera units only: radar needs 6–8 ft behind the ball. |
| Two-car garage bay | 10 ft | 18 ft | 22 ft | Every option is open, including ceiling-mounted units and a 16:9 screen. |
| Spare bedroom | 8 ft | 11 ft | 12 ft | Below the published depth minimum. Net and mat, not a simulator bay. |
Thresholds as published by the manufacturers and retailers listed at the foot of this page, checked 1 September 2026, with the Trackman iO mounting bands re-checked 6 September 2026. A mat raises the floor about 2.5 in and an enclosure takes about 3 in off the ceiling; both are already subtracted from the swing-height figures above.
Step 1 · Measure
Your room
Measure to the lowest thing on the ceiling — a light fixture, a pipe, a garage door rail, a beam. That is your real ceiling, not the drywall.
Thresholds come from published guidance by Carl's Place, Shop Indoor Golf, SkyTrak and Trackman. Sources are listed under the result.

Link to your result
Your measurements are carried in the link itself, after the # sign, so the link reopens this page with the same answer. That part of the address is not sent to our server. Anyone you send the link to can see the measurements in it.

The Sim Room, “Golf simulator room size calculator”. Data as of 7 September 2026. Dataset version 2026-09-07.2.
The data behind it
The published enclosure and impact screen dimensions this page relies on are available as a CSV, with the source URL and check date on every row.
Data as of 7 September 2026
- 2026-09-08 — Each saved room now carries a build checklist in the card at the top of this page: the questions to put to a supplier, plus the items your own measurements make relevant — a garage temperature range, a camera-only shortlist, a left-hander sharing the room. Ticks are kept with the room in this browser. Thresholds unchanged.
- 2026-09-08 — Save on this device now holds up to five named rooms instead of one. A room saved under the old single-room version is carried over automatically. The card at the top of this page lists the other saved rooms and says how many specifications have changed since each was saved. Thresholds unchanged.
- 2026-09-07 — Added Save on this device. The room, the golfer settings, the verdict and the dataset version they were checked against can be kept in this browser's local storage, which gives this page and the home page a Continue button and a re-check prompt when a threshold changes after the room was saved. Nothing is uploaded. Thresholds unchanged.
- 2026-09-07 — Every threshold on this page now comes from one dataset file (version 2026-09-07.2) that carries the source URL, the scope and the check date for each number, instead of being typed into the page. No threshold changed.
- 2026-09-06 — Share links now carry the measurements after the # sign instead of as a query string, so they are no longer part of the page request. Added a Clear room data button. Corrected the Trackman iO ceiling band: the standard iO publishes a LOW band from 8′10″ measured at the hitting surface, and the iO DUO starts at 9′4″.
- 2026-09-01 — Added the published enclosure and screen dimensions CSV, and the worked examples table for readers without JavaScript. Thresholds unchanged.
- 2026-09-01 — Measurements now travel in the URL, so a result can be bookmarked or sent to a builder.
- 2026-08-25 — First published, with the ceiling, width and depth thresholds taken from the manufacturer and retailer pages listed below.
