What do these three numbers decide?

Ceiling decides whether you can swing at all. Depth decides which launch monitors are available to you at all. Width decides whether a left-hander can share the room without moving anything. The table below runs five common rooms through the same thresholds this calculator uses.

Spare bedroom	8 ft	11 ft	12 ft	Below the published depth minimum. Net and mat, not a simulator bay.

Thresholds as published by the manufacturers and retailers listed at the foot of this page, checked 1 September 2026, with the Trackman iO mounting bands re-checked 6 September 2026. A mat raises the floor about 2.5 in and an enclosure takes about 3 in off the ceiling; both are already subtracted from the swing-height figures above.

What your room allows

Why depth decides your launch monitor

Camera units (SkyTrak, Foresight GC3 and GCQuad, Uneekor EYE MINI) sit beside the ball and need no space behind you. Radar units (Trackman 4, FlightScope Mevo+, Full Swing KIT, Garmin R10) sit behind you — 6 to 10 ft behind — so the same swing needs roughly 6 ft more room. That single fact rules half the market in or out before you compare a single spec.

Before you spend anything

Stand back 10–12 ft. Not a comfort preference — a safety one. Carl's Place states this minimum for the safety of both the golfer and the screen. An owner measuring bounce-back reported center-strikes returning 8–15 ft, and one instructor watched a student catch his own drive on the way back.

If it's a garage, solve temperature before you solve decor. Garmin publishes an operating range of −10°C to 55°C for the R10 but a charging range of only 0°C to 45°C — so a freezing garage gives you a unit that runs but won't charge. Most other manufacturers don't publish an environmental range at all.
