Garage golf simulator layouts, by garage size

And the trade-off each one makes. Garages are the most common home for a simulator because they're the only room in a normal house with the depth. They're also the worst room for temperature, noise and ceiling height, and every layout below is a way of paying one of those bills instead of another.

Carl's Place gives an ideal garage as 14 ft wide × 18 ft deep × 10 ft high. If your garage door rail hangs into that height — and in most garages it does — your real ceiling is the rail, not the joists. Measure to the rail.

Six layouts

Each one is described by the three numbers this site uses everywhere: height to the garage door rail, width, and depth. The link under each layout opens the room size calculator with those numbers already entered, so you can change one of them and see what moves.

1. Single-car garage, screen on the end wall

  • Fits when — the garage door rail is at least 8 ft above the floor, the bay is 10 ft wide and the garage is 20 ft deep.
  • Comfortable at — 9 ft to the rail and 12 ft of width, which is the tall-garage row in the calculator.
  • Screen goes — on the end wall, so the 20 ft of depth becomes the swing axis and the door rail runs along the bay rather than over the tee.
  • Launch monitor family — either. 20 ft of depth clears the 15 ft camera floor and leaves room for the 6–8 ft a radar unit needs behind the ball.
  • Trade-off — at 8 ft to the rail, a mat (2.5 in) and an enclosure (3 in) leave just over 7 ft 6 in of swing height, which is a short-game room until the rail moves.

2. Two-car garage, one bay converted

  • Fits when — one bay gives 10–12 ft of width and the garage is 20–22 ft deep.
  • Comfortable at — 9 ft to the rail, 12 ft of width, 20 ft of depth.
  • Screen goes — across the end of the converted bay. The car keeps the other bay, so the frame has to clear the second door track and any center post.
  • Launch monitor family — either, at 20 ft of depth.
  • Trade-off — 12 ft of width is under the 14 ft that lets a right- and a left-hander both hit from the center, so this is a one-side room with an offset tee.

3. Two-car garage, full width

  • Fits when — the rail is at 10 ft, the room is 18 ft wide and 22 ft deep.
  • Comfortable at — the same numbers. This is the room where the measurements stop deciding for you.
  • Screen goes — across the full 18 ft wall, which is where a 16:9 screen fits.
  • Launch monitor family — every family, including ceiling-mounted units: 10 ft less a 2.5 in mat is 117.5 in, inside the Trackman iO MID and HIGH bands.
  • Trade-off — the garage stops holding a car, and this is the most expensive version of the room.

4. Low door rail, under 9 ft

  • Fits when — the rail sits under 9 ft, whatever the width and depth are.
  • Comfortable at — it does not become comfortable. An 8 ft rail leaves just over 7 ft 6 in of swing height once the mat and the enclosure are in.
  • Screen goes — on the end wall, hung below the rail, with a net rather than a full enclosure if the drop is tight.
  • Launch monitor family — depth still decides, but height is the binding constraint. Overhead units are out: the Trackman iO LOW band needs about 9 ft 1 in of ceiling once a 2.5 in mat is under you.
  • Trade-off — chipping, wedges and putting. Price a high-lift door conversion, or a different room, before you price launch monitors.

5. High-lift conversion or a tall garage, rail 9–10 ft

  • Fits when — the rail clears 9 ft, the room is 14 ft wide and at least 18 ft deep.
  • Comfortable at — 10 ft to the rail, which is where the ceiling stops being the thing you think about.
  • Screen goes — on the end wall, with the door track pushed up against the ceiling by the high-lift hardware.
  • Launch monitor family — either at 18 ft of depth, and at 14 ft of width a right- and a left-hander can share the tee.

6. Detached garage or outbuilding

  • Fits when — the building is 14 ft wide, 18 ft deep and 10 ft high, which is the ideal garage Carl's Place publishes.
  • Comfortable at — the same, with a heat source and a 220V outlet ($250–$800 each) budgeted in from the start.
  • Screen goes — on the end wall. A detached building usually has no door rail to work around, which is the main thing it buys you.
  • Launch monitor family — either, at 18 ft of depth.
  • Trade-off — temperature and power, not geometry. Garmin publishes an operating range of −10°C to 55°C and a charging range of 0°C to 45°C for the R10; most other makers publish nothing at all.

Living with it — the parts the photos don't show

Six things owners report after the build, gathered from manufacturer specifications and from owners describing their own rooms. Some of this is documented; some of it is anecdote, and it's marked where it is.

The ball comes back

Carl's Place specifies standing 10–12 ft off the screen for the safety of both the golfer and the screen. An owner who measured it reported center-strikes rebounding 8–15 ft depending on ball speed — and a coach in the same thread described a student catching his own drive on the return, bare-handed. His fix was a 1.5 in memory-foam mattress topper glued behind the center of the screen, which brought the rebound down to 4–9 ft. That's one person's result, not a specification, but the direction is right: mass behind the screen absorbs.

The temperature is a real constraint, and it's badly documented

Garmin publishes an operating range for the R10 of −10°C to 55°C and a charging range of 0°C to 45°C. That gap matters: a freezing garage gives you a unit that runs but will not charge. What's more striking is that we could not find published environmental specifications for SkyTrak, Foresight, Uneekor, Trackman, Mevo+ or Full Swing at all. Owners in Ontario and Minnesota report running through −10°C winters without failures, and they report waiting for projector lenses to demist and hearing a faint hum from a cold unit warming up. Absence of a published spec is not permission — ask your supplier in writing before you put a $14,000 unit in an unheated garage.

It's louder inside the house than you expect

The strike itself isn't the problem — the transmission is. The thump of a driver into an impact screen travels through the structure, which matters most when the garage is integral to the house or there's a bedroom above. A hard-surfaced room also reverberates: acoustic specialists point out that a strike which sounds unremarkable outdoors becomes unpleasant in a sealed box. We could not find anyone publishing a measured decibel figure, so treat this qualitatively; soft surfaces, and not scheduling sessions at 11pm, both help.

Lighting can break a camera-based unit

This one is genuinely contested. Owners have reported LED downlights directly above a SkyTrak causing repeated read failures, fixed by switching to incandescent or by moving the light behind the unit; another reported Foresight advising halogen and dimmers only. Others insist camera units are designed to work across the full light range. SkyTrak's own FAQ says nothing about indoor lighting at all — it only warns against direct sunlight on the lens. The safe read: put lighting behind the hitter, aim nothing at the screen, and if you're buying camera-based, ask the retailer about your specific fixtures before you wire the room.

The screen is a consumable

Impact screens wear and eventually fail. We looked for a manufacturer publishing an expected lifespan or a warranty term and did not find one. The figures circulating online — a few thousand strikes for the cheapest screens, six figures for premium three-layer builds — come from content sites rather than makers, and we can't verify them. Ask the question before you buy, and get the answer in writing.

You'll use it differently than you think

The pattern owners describe isn't the two-hour weekend session — it's twenty minutes, frequently, often at odd hours. That changes what matters. Owners often say they value a room they can switch on from the doorway over one that takes five minutes to set up, but we found no reliable data quantifying how setup time changes usage. Treat convenience as a design factor, not a measured effect.


What we'd do

Measure to the garage door rail. If that number is under about 9 ft, a full swing with the long clubs is unlikely for most adults, so price a high-lift door conversion or a short-game room before you price launch monitors. Under about 18 ft of depth, radar units struggle to get their 6–8 ft behind the ball without eating the safety standoff, so camera units are the realistic list. Then spend on the mat before the projector, and on the barriers before the bar.

Price the building work before the golf equipment. Finishing a garage costs $3,000–$17,000 in the US and insulation alone is $0.50–$3.00+ per square foot (checked 23 August 2026), which is money that buys no golf at all — see what the room itself costs.
