Radar vs camera: the 6 ft that decides your launch monitor

Every home launch monitor sits in one of three places — beside the ball, behind you, or on the ceiling. That single choice needs about six feet of extra room in one direction, and it rules half the market in or out before you have compared a single spec, a single price, or a single review.

Camera units sit beside the ball. They need nothing behind you. Minimum room depth around 15 ft.
Radar units sit 6–10 ft behind the ball. Minimum room depth around 16–17 ft, recommended 18–21 ft.
Ceiling units sit overhead and need 9′4″–10′6″ of height, but free the floor entirely.

Why nobody tells you this first

Search for a launch monitor and you will get comparison after comparison of ball speed accuracy, spin measurement, software libraries and price. All useful. All downstream of a question nobody leads with: does this thing physically fit in the room you own?

There is a practical reason. Room-depth guidance is usually split across manufacturer manuals, retailer measuring guides and product pages, while the comparisons people read first are organized by accuracy, software and price. The space information exists — it is genuinely good, and it is cited throughout this article — but it tends to live on a separate "measuring your space" page you find after you have already decided what you want.

This site does not sell hardware, so it can put the room first.

The three families

Camera, beside the ball

Photometric. High-speed cameras read the ball and clubface from the side at the moment of impact. Needs a clear view of the ball; needs nothing behind you.

Doppler. Tracks the ball through actual flight, which is why it needs distance to watch from. That distance comes out of your room.

Turning that into a room

Room depth is built from three pieces that every guide agrees on: 1 ft behind the screen, 10–12 ft of standoff between you and the screen, and whatever the unit needs behind the ball. Add them up and the split is stark.

One published figure we think is wrong

PlayBetter's space guides for the GC3, GCQuad and EYE MINI give a minimum room of 10 ft wide × 10–12 ft deep × 9 ft high. We're flagging it rather than repeating it, because the same industry — PlayBetter included — states elsewhere that you should stand 10–12 ft off the screen for safety. A 10 ft deep room cannot contain a 10 ft standoff plus a foot behind the screen plus a body. The figure appears to describe how little space the sensor needs, not how little space the room needs. Their own article gives 12–15 ft a few lines later.

Take 15 ft as the floor for camera units, and treat any source telling you 10 ft as answering a different question.

Know your depth? Shop the right half of the market

If you measured under about 18 ft, you are almost certainly shopping cameras — check the behind-ball figure of any radar unit you still want against the table above. SkyTrak starts at $695, Uneekor EYE MINI Lite at $1,999, Foresight GC3 at $6,999. If you measured over 18 ft, the whole catalog is open and you can choose on budget instead of geometry.

Four things the depth number doesn't cover

1. Left-handers are a camera problem, not a width problem

Everyone knows right- and left-handed use needs 14 ft of width. Less well known: the side-mounted camera units — GC3, GCQuad, EYE MINI — read from beside the ball, which means the unit has to be physically carried to the other side every time a left-hander takes over. Radar units, sitting centrally behind the ball, don't care. Nor do ceiling units. If your room will be shared between a right- and a left-hander, that is a real daily friction that no spec sheet lists.

2. Radar pins you to a small patch of floor

Garmin's manual for the R10 specifies not just a distance but an area: a 2 × 2 ft hitting zone, starting 6 ft from the unit, within which the tee can move. Step outside it and the numbers degrade. If you were imagining freely repositioning your mat, that assumption belongs to the camera family.

3. Ceiling units trade depth for height — and the window is narrow

Overhead cameras are the elegant answer: nothing on the floor, no side to swap, no space behind you. But the mounting window is narrow. Trackman publishes three calibration bands for the iO, measured from the hitting surface to the ceiling: LOW 270–290 cm (8′10″–9′6″), MID 285–305 cm (9′4″–10′) and HIGH 300–320 cm (9′10″–10′6″). The standard iO can use all three; the iO DUO uses MID and HIGH only, so it starts at 9′4″. "From the hitting surface" matters, because a 2.5 in mat comes off your ceiling first: a flat 9 ft ceiling with a mat leaves about 8′9″, just under the LOW band. Check the current regional installation guide before you mount anything.

4. Lighting is a camera constraint, and it is contested

Photometric units read light, so light matters to them in a way it doesn't to radar. How much is genuinely disputed. Owners have reported LED downlights directly above a SkyTrak causing repeated read failures, fixed by moving the light behind the unit; another reported Foresight advising halogen and dimmers only. Others insist camera units handle the full range. SkyTrak's own FAQ says nothing about indoor lighting at all — only that direct sunlight on the lens can affect accuracy. If you are going camera and wiring a room from scratch, ask your retailer about your specific fixtures before the electrician arrives.

The one number to check before any of this

Depth decides which unit. Ceiling decides whether. A room can be 22 ft deep and still be a chipping room if the ceiling is 8 ft. Run both at once rather than one at a time.

Depth is also a budget question, not only a shopping one. Gaining the depth or the height a radar unit needs means building work, and a fully finished garage costs $3,000–$17,000 in the US while a finished basement costs $15,000–$75,000 (both checked 23 August 2026) — often more than the difference between the two launch monitors being compared.
