How Much Room Does a Garmin Approach R10 Need Indoors?

Garmin lists a minimum indoor space of 15 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8 feet high for the Approach R10. The ball must be at least 8 feet from the net or impact screen, and the R10 sits 6 to 8 feet behind the ball. Those are setup minimums; your swing, screen clearance, and room obstacles may require more space.
Why the R10 Needs a Long Room
The R10 is a rear-mounted radar launch monitor. It sits behind the golfer and watches the shot travel away from the ball, so its working space stretches in both directions from the hitting position.
The 15 x 8 x 8-Foot Figure Is a Minimum
Garmin calls 15 by 8 by 8 feet the minimum and adds that "Using a larger space can improve accuracy."
The 8-foot ceiling number is not a promise that every golfer can swing a driver there. Test from the actual hitting surface, with the longest club you plan to use. A thick mat or raised platform takes away ceiling clearance.
Mark Eight Feet in Front and Six to Eight Feet Behind
A small device can create a surprisingly large floor plan. Start at the screen, mark the hitting position at least 8 feet back, then mark another 6 to 8 feet behind the ball for the R10.
Now add the screen's required rear clearance. If the room only works by stealing one of those distances, it is not really an R10 room.
Match the R10 Height to a Raised Mat
Garmin's manual says that if you use a golf mat, the bottom edge of the launch monitor should sit above the mat. Its support page suggests putting "a wood block or another flat object under the Approach R10 to raise it."
Use the red alignment line on top of the unit to point through the ball toward the target. Garmin's tip is to lay a club on the ground between the line and the tee to check it. Small placement errors are easier to correct before the mat and screen become permanent.
Give Yourself More Than the Published Minimum if You Can
A garage may technically meet the numbers and still feel cramped once you add door tracks, storage, a projector, or a walkway. Garages add radar problems as well. Garmin says the area should be free of "AC Units, vehicles, refrigerators, fluorescent lights, fans, and heaters," and names finished garage floors among the shiny surfaces that can affect performance.
If the room is short, Garmin's Approach R50 sits 1 to 2 feet from the ball instead of several feet behind it.
