What does a starter set of cookware, plates and utensils cost?
Summary
One selected starter basket of pans, dishes, eating utensils, basic preparation tools, glasses and mugs comes to about $120 before tax and delivery, using IKEA US prices checked 2026-11-01. The quantities include the displayed online minimums for glasses and mugs, so the basket is not an optimized minimum for one person. Compare its contents with the meals you cook: the preparation knives are small paring knives, and different cooking may require other tools. Count lids separately when comparing cookware sets.
Start with the meals you will cook
For one cook, a frying pan, a small saucepan for grains or sauces, and a larger pot for pasta or soup make a useful starting list. A lid that fits the saucepan and the large pot covers most early cooking. Compare that with the meals you actually make before buying specialty pieces. The furnishing list's rule, recorded 2026-08-22, is "about three pans for each person"; it is a planning allowance rather than a reason to buy more pans than you will use.
For plates and bowls, the rule is "two sets for each person" (recorded 2026-08-22), allowing one set while the other is in the sink or dishwasher. Consider an extra set if you often have a guest over.
For basic stovetop meals, start by comparing IKEA's ANNONS set with the pans you already own: the $19.99 US offer checked 2026-11-01 buys three vessels and two lids. Add the separate frying pan if your meals call for it. The priced basket below includes flatware, a spatula, small preparation knives and a board, so you can decide which of those items belong in your first order.
Sets versus single pieces
Piece counts can include lids, so check what a "piece" means before you compare boxes.
Heritage Steel's product page for its 10-piece set, read 2026-10-23, lists these contents:
- 8.5-inch and 10.5-inch fry pans
- 2-quart saucier with lid
- 3-quart saucepan with lid
- 4-quart sauté pan with lid
- 8-quart stock pot with lid
In this set, that is 2 fry pans + 4 lidded pots = 6 cooking vessels, and 6 vessels + 4 lids = 10 pieces. Under this site's three-pans-per-person rule, 6 ÷ 3 = 2 people. For one person, compare those six vessels with the meals you cook rather than treating the rule as proof that half the box will be unused.
HexClad's Hybrid 12-piece set is $699 on this site's list (checked 2026-10-22). Before buying any set, count the vessels without lids and compare that number with how many you would use in a typical week.
Dinnerware raises the same question. IKEA US's dinnerware category page, read 2026-10-23, describes an 18-piece set as typically holding 6 dinner plates, 6 side plates and 6 bowls. If you need only two or three of each, a box of six leaves extras. Buying single pieces lets you match the count to your household; we have not compared their prices with the sets.
A priced starter basket
The following IKEA US prices were checked 2026-11-01. This is one selected basket, not a cheapest-kitchen claim or a price for every possible tool.
| Product | What the price covers | Displayed price |
|---|---|---|
| ANNONS glass/stainless steel 5-piece cookware set | 0.9 qt saucepan, 1.7 qt saucepan with lid, 2.8 qt pot with lid | $19.99 |
| MIDDAGSMAT 9-inch non-stick/stainless steel frying pan | One frying pan | $9.99 |
| GODMIDDAG white 18-piece dinnerware set | 6 dinner plates, 6 side plates, 6 bowls | $49.99 |
| FÖRNUFT stainless steel 20-piece flatware set | 4 each: fork, knife, spoon, teaspoon, dessert/salad fork | $12.99 |
| LEGITIM white 13.5 x 9.5-inch cutting board | One board | $3.99 |
| KNORRHANE light beige/anthracite 13-inch spatula | One spatula | $3.99 |
| UPPFYLLD mixed-color 3-piece paring knife set | One paring, one serrated paring and one turning knife | $4.99 |
| POKAL clear 12 oz glass | Four individual glasses | $1.99 each |
| FÄRGKLAR matte green 13 oz mug | Two individual mugs | $3 each |
Rounded, $20 + $10 + $50 + $13 + $4 + $4 + $5 + 4 × $2 + 2 × $3 = about $120 before tax and delivery. ANNONS has three vessels and two lids; the separate frying pan makes four vessels in this example. IKEA lists ANNONS as suitable for all cooktops, including induction. That compatibility statement belongs to ANNONS, not automatically to every other pan in the basket.
The flatware knives are for eating; UPPFYLLD supplies separate small knives for peeling and trimming fruit and vegetables. IKEA marked that set as a last-chance item, so confirm stock before relying on its dated price. For larger cutting jobs, choose and price a suitable knife separately. The basket buys four POKAL glasses and two FÄRGKLAR mugs to meet their displayed online minimum order quantities. These counts can leave extras for one person; they do not establish the cheapest way to furnish that household.
Scaling up for two, three or four
The table applies the furnishing list's sizing rules as an illustration, not a store's household-capacity recommendation. In the dish columns, "set" means one dinner plate, one side plate and one bowl, matching the typical 18-piece IKEA example with 6 of each. When a box is sold as a "set," compare its contents with that definition before using the count for an order.
| Household | Dish sets (2 per person) | 18-piece box (6 sets) covers it? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | 1 × 2 = 2 | Yes, 6 − 2 = 4 sets spare |
| 2 people | 2 × 2 = 4 | Yes, 6 − 4 = 2 sets spare |
| 3 people | 3 × 2 = 6 | Exactly, 6 − 6 = 0 |
| 4 people | 4 × 2 = 8 | No, 8 − 6 = 2 sets short |
Scale the pans to the meals and the number of people cooking at once, rather than multiplying the starter basket by the household count. People sharing a kitchen may use the same pots; dinner plates still need to be available for everyone at the table. The dish column includes the assumed spare set per person, not just the pieces used at one meal. For four people, one 18-piece box plus two more sets of single pieces, or two boxes, meets that planning count.
Returning what you do not use
Before using a boxed set, ask whether a return must include the whole set and how opening or using it affects eligibility. Ask about missing lids, packaging and accessories as part of that same question. Keep the answer with the order details so you know whether the policy covers the purchase as a complete box rather than treating every unused pan as a separate return. IKEA's returns page, read 2026-10-23, gives 365 days for new, unopened products and 180 days for open ones. It also says "We do not accept returns on plants, cut fabric, custom countertops and as-is products." We have not confirmed how those terms apply to kitchenware, so check the item's own listing before you open the box.
For any store, keep the box and inserts until you are sure the set suits your kitchen.
Delivery adds to a small order. IKEA's delivery page, read 2026-10-23, starts Standard Delivery at $29 for non-members and $19 for IKEA Family members, and every tier requires a $35 merchandise subtotal. A kitchen order of plates and a few tools may fall below that minimum, so carry it home or add it to a larger order. This site's cost page puts the kitchen next to the rest of the apartment, and this site's lists show the pots, pans, plates and bowls with their shops and checked dates.
