Which coffee table fits a small living room?
Summary
In a small living room, a coffee table fits if it leaves a clear walkway between its edge and the sofa and runs no longer than about two-thirds of the sofa's width. The two-thirds figure is this site's rule of thumb, not a store's rule. Sometimes the best fit is no coffee table. A storage ottoman or a pair of small side tables can hold a drink and a remote without blocking the path. Which choice works depends on your sofa's width, the room's depth from the sofa to the opposite wall, and whether people walk through the space between them.
The walkway
Whether you can still walk past the table comes down to its depth, measured from the sofa side to the far side. If the living area has no separate hallway, the space between the sofa and the table, or between the table and the TV wall, becomes the path from the door to the kitchen or bedroom.
Work it out on the floor before you buy:
- Measure from the front of the sofa's seat cushion to the wall or TV stand across from it.
- Subtract the table's depth. LACK takes 21 5/8 inches of that distance, and STOCKHOLM 2025 takes 17 3/4 inches, according to IKEA's pages checked 2026-10-23.
- Split what is left between the sofa side and the far side. Decide which side people will walk on, and give that side more room.
- Mark the table's footprint with painter's tape and walk the path a few times, including once while carrying something.
For comparison, the IKEA table dimensions below illustrate a trade-off between length and depth. STOCKHOLM 2025 is about 4 inches narrower than LACK, so it leaves more walking space, but it is far longer. LACK is short enough for a loveseat, but it extends farther from the sofa. A long, narrow table can suit a room that is shallow from front to back, while a room that is narrow from side to side needs a short one. Tape on the floor shows which case you are in; a listing photo cannot show how much room the table leaves around it.
If the path still feels tight, check for a door that swings into the room, a radiator, or a TV stand that extends past the tape. The coffee table is often the easiest of these to change.
Length against the sofa
Start with the sofa you already own or have chosen. This site's coffee table list gives the general sizing rule as "A bit shorter than the sofa." In a small room, a stricter target leaves the sofa's ends open: about two-thirds of the sofa's width. That leaves length beyond each end of the table, but it does not establish reach from the seat or the width of a walking route. Check those separately in the room.
For four sofas on this site's sofa list, the targets work out like this (our arithmetic, not a store's recommendation):
| Sofa (store, checked) | Width | × 2/3 | Coffee table length target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burrow Range 2-Piece (Burrow, 2026-09-07) | 62 in | 62 × 2/3 = 41.3 | about 41 in or less |
| IKEA KLIPPAN Loveseat (IKEA, 2026-09-06) | 70.9 in | 70.9 × 2/3 = 47.3 | about 47 in or less |
| Best Choice Products Modular Pillowtop 82 inch (Best Choice Products, 2026-09-25) | 82 in | 82 × 2/3 = 54.7 | about 55 in or less |
| IKEA KIVIK 3-Seat Sofa (IKEA, 2026-09-06) | 89.8 in | 89.8 × 2/3 = 59.9 | about 60 in or less |
IKEA's product pages, read on 2026-10-23, give two IKEA tables to hold against those targets. The LACK coffee table in white is 35 3/8 inches long, 21 5/8 inches wide and 17 3/4 inches high. The STOCKHOLM 2025 coffee table in pine is 63 inches long, 17 3/4 inches wide and 14 5/8 inches high.
LACK, at about 35 inches, is shorter than the target for every sofa in the table, including the 62-inch Burrow. STOCKHOLM 2025, at 63 inches, is longer than the target even for the 89.8-inch KIVIK, which works out to about 60 inches. Beside the 70.9-inch KLIPPAN, STOCKHOLM would be almost as long as the loveseat. It suits a long sofa in a room with space at both ends, not a loveseat in a narrow room.
For height, the comparison is with your own sofa. A table well below the seat makes you lean down for a cup. Compare the table height with the seat and the position where you would reach for a cup. Ask the maker before using a table as a footrest; that use is not verified by its height. The two IKEA tables differ by about 3 inches in height, so check the seat height on your sofa's product page before you choose.
Alternatives to a coffee table
If a table and a walkway cannot both fit, keep the walkway and get a surface another way:
- A storage ottoman can hold a tray and keep blankets or cables inside. If you want to use it as an extra seat, confirm that the maker permits that use and check its load limit; upholstery alone does not establish suitability. If you plan to set drinks on it, look for a firm top or use a rigid tray. If you are still choosing the sofa, Best Choice Products' Modular Pillowtop 82 inch comes with a storage ottoman, 33 x 25 in on the sofa list, and is $400 on this site's list (checked 2026-09-25), so the ottoman can take the coffee table's place from the start.
- A pair of small side tables, one at each arm, keeps the space in front of the sofa open. Each person has a surface within reach, and either table can move out of the way when the room is needed for something else.
- A single small table that can move works for one person. You can pull it close while you eat and push it against the wall afterward.
If you expect to move, consider where a long table would go in another room as well as whether it fits this one. A smaller table or ottoman may offer more possible positions. When the layout is uncertain, starting with the smaller piece lets you see whether a larger surface is needed.
This site's cost page puts the living room into the total cost of furnishing an apartment, and the coffee table and sofa lists carry the pieces discussed here with the store and the date each figure was read.
