What furniture keeps a small apartment from feeling cramped?

Summary

Judge small-apartment furniture by how much floor it covers while you are using it, not by how compact it looks in the listing. A piece that does two jobs only frees floor space if it removes a second piece from the room. Storage belongs under the bed and up the walls, and anything tall gets anchored.

Do the floor math before you shop

A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches, which is 33.3 square feet. In a 10 by 12 foot bedroom (120 square feet), that is 28% of the floor before the frame goes around it. IKEA's MALM queen frame measures 66 1/8 by 83 1/8 inches, about 38.2 square feet, so the bed alone takes close to a third of the room. A full mattress (53 by 75 inches) gives back about 5.7 square feet compared with a queen.

The futon makes the case in numbers. A sofa of that size plus a twin mattress (38 by 75 inches) would cover about 34.3 square feet; the futon laid flat covers 17.2. The catch is length. Flat, it is 65.25 inches long, nearly 10 inches shorter than a twin mattress, so it suits a guest far better than a tall person sleeping on it every night.

The drop-leaf table covers about 5.5 square feet folded against a wall and about 12.25 opened for dinner. The sectional's ottoman is a separate piece, 24 by 24 inches and 18 inches high, so the chaise can become a footstool or a spare seat when the room needs its floor back.

Under the bed, height is the limit

Under-bed bins have to be shorter than the gap. MALM leaves 8 1/4 inches under the frame; Article's Basi leaves 6. Picking the bed frame decides how much can go underneath it.

Tall storage needs to stay standing

Going up the wall saves floor, and it raises the tip-over question. In CPSC's latest staff report, 44% of tip-over deaths happened in bedrooms. The federal stability rule for dressers made after September 1, 2023 does not cover bookcases or TV furniture. For pieces already in the room, CPSC points to anti-tip brackets that cost little and screw into the wall.
