What furniture fits a small apartment entryway?
Summary
In a small apartment entry, wall-mounted hooks or a narrow wall shelf usually fit better than a bench or a console table. The entry has to stay clear for two things: the arc of the front door as it opens, and every sofa, mattress and box you carry in later. A freestanding piece can still work if it sits outside the door's arc and leaves the walkway open. If that piece is tall, anchor it to the wall. CPSC says existing furniture can be anchored with "inexpensive anti-tip brackets."
What the door swing leaves
Before choosing anything, open the front door all the way and see where its edge travels. The floor inside that quarter circle has to stay empty. A bench, a shoe rack or a basket placed there keeps the door from opening fully, which is a nuisance every day and a real obstacle on delivery day. As a rule of thumb, treat the wall behind the open door as space for something no deeper than the gap between the door and the wall.
That leaves two stretches of wall: the strip beside the latch side of the door, and the wall facing you as you walk in. Floor depth along either one is scarce, because the entry is also the start of the route every large piece takes into the apartment. A console that leaves you comfortable room to walk past can still leave too little room for two people turning a sofa box. If you are still waiting on big deliveries, measure the entry as part of that route, door width and turns included. This site's measuring guide walks through those measurements.
Wall storage can leave the floor clear, but coats and projecting shelves still occupy space. Check them against the full door swing and the route you will walk through, including at shoulder and head height.
Pieces that fit
Roughly from least floor used to most:
- Wall hooks or a hook rail: no floor footprint, and coats hang flat against the wall. Cost depends on whether you screw them into studs or anchors or use adhesive hooks. That choice also affects what your lease lets you do to the walls and what it costs to patch the holes when you move out. How much an adhesive hook holds depends on the product, so check the package against the weight of a wet winter coat.
- A narrow wall shelf: holds keys, mail and a phone without standing on the floor. Open the door fully and check the shelf's position against the whole door, not just the handle, before mounting it.
- A curtain across an existing storage recess: use a fitting intended for the curtain and opening. IKEA's BOTAREN is a shower tension rod, priced at $12.99 on 2026-10-23; ask IKEA about the proposed window or alcove use before choosing it. The RITVA pair in 57 x 118 inches, checked 2026-10-23, still needs a compatible support and enough drop. A curtain can conceal storage; it does not make its rod a support for hanging coats.
- A shallow shoe cabinet or slim console: useful when shoes pile up. It belongs only outside the door's arc, with enough walkway left for deliveries, and a tall, shallow cabinet is the shape that tips.
- A bench: the largest footprint here. It fits only where the entry is really a short hallway or has a wall clear of both the door and the main route.
Anchoring tall pieces
A tall, shallow cabinet has a high center of gravity and a narrow base, and by the door it gets bumped by doors, bags and kids. CPSC's Anchor It! page says existing furniture can be anchored with "inexpensive anti-tip brackets." It also says new furniture such as dressers is sold with anti-tip devices, and that those devices should be installed right away (CPSC, checked 2026-10-23). The same page says TVs that are not wall mounted should still be anchored, which matters if the entry opens straight into a living area.
For clothing storage units made after September 1, 2023, CPSC's rule under the STURDY law requires three stability tests: clothing load, horizontal force, and carpet with child weight. The units must also ship with an anti-tip device meeting ASTM F3096 and carry the required warning labels (CPSC, checked 2026-10-23). Whether a particular entry cabinet counts as a clothing storage unit under that rule depends on how the rule defines one, so read the box and the assembly instructions, and don't assume an anti-tip device is included.
Renters face a second question about the drill holes an anchor needs. Before drilling into a wall or putting screws into studs, ask your landlord or property manager whether wall anchoring is allowed and how patched holes are handled at move-out. If you would rather not do it yourself, IKEA's assembly service through Taskrabbit starts at $52 (IKEA, checked 2026-10-23). IKEA says assembly "includes installation of any tip-over restraints for safety purposes," and the work is done by an independent contractor.
Small hooks and shelves don't tip, but they still need fasteners rated for what will hang on them. Choose the fasteners and removal method with the piece, so the installation fits both the load and the rental conditions.
Delivery and returns
Before ordering a cabinet, allow for getting it into the apartment and for a possible return. At IKEA, delivery for non-members starts at $29 for Standard Delivery, $39 for Scheduled Doorstep and $69 for Scheduled In-Home. IKEA Family members pay from $19, $29 and $59, and every tier needs a $35 merchandise subtotal (IKEA, checked 2026-10-23). Getting a non-member order carried inside instead of left at Standard costs $69 − $29 = $40 more at the starting prices.
IKEA accepts returns of new, unopened products within 365 days and opened products within 180 days. It does not accept returns on "plants, cut fabric, custom countertops and as-is products" (IKEA, checked 2026-10-23). If you aren't sure a cabinet will clear the door, leave it boxed until you have checked the space with tape on the floor. This site's cost page shows how pieces like these add up across a whole apartment.
