Closet and under-bed storage for a small apartment: what it costs
Summary
The gap beneath a bed you already need can provide storage without adding another piece of furniture, though bins have their own cost. On this site's list it is 6 to 11 inches on six of the seven queen frames in the table below; the Wyatt leaves 2. Pair it with a dresser chosen to fit the drawer pull-out space beside the bed. Closet organizers add room without using any floor. Prices are from this site's list, with the shop and the date each was read, and may have changed since. Any dresser tall enough to tip needs to be anchored to the wall.
Under the bed
If you already need a bed frame, compare its usable clearance with the bins or luggage you hope to put underneath. These are the queen frames on this site's list with an under-bed figure.
| Frame (queen) | Shop | Price, checked | Under the bed |
|---|---|---|---|
| MALM | IKEA | $299, 2026-09-06 | 8.25 in |
| Basi | Article | $399, 2026-09-07 | 6 in |
| Shalini Upholstered | Zinus | $700, 2026-09-07 | 7 in |
| Parsons | Room & Board | $1,199, 2026-09-07 | 11 in |
| The Floyd Bed | Floyd | $1,750, 2026-09-07 | 6 in |
| Classic Bed | Thuma | $1,995, 2026-09-07 | 9 in |
| Wyatt | Room & Board | $2,199, 2026-09-07 | 2 in |
Clearance doesn't follow price: the $299 MALM leaves more room underneath than the $1,750 Floyd, and the $2,199 Wyatt leaves almost none. For under-bed storage on a small budget, the MALM is the cheapest frame in the table and gives 8.25 in; if you want the most room underneath, Room & Board's Parsons has the largest figure at 11 in. The MALM price and 8.25 in come from IKEA's white MALM queen page. A separate IKEA MALM veneer page, checked 2026-10-23, says a box spring is not required: a mattress can go directly on a slatted base, and a box spring may also be used. Confirm that on the page for the exact MALM you buy.
Bins and rolling boxes have to be shorter than the gap, with a little room to slide freely. Measure the opening where you will slide them in, since rails and supports differ from frame to frame.
The other route is a bed with drawers built in. Crate & Barrel's Lafayette Storage Bed, Queen has 3 drawers, one on each side and one at the foot. It cost $2,698 on this site's list, checked 2026-09-07. That is $2,399 more than the MALM ($2,698 − $299 = $2,399). Drawers in a bed need space beside and in front of it to open. Loose bins also need enough room to be pulled out, so measure the access space for either arrangement.
A dresser that fits
In a small bedroom, how far the drawers pull out matters more than how deep the dresser is, because open drawers are what block the path to the bed. IKEA's page for the KILBERGET 6-drawer dresser, checked 2026-10-23, gives a drawer pull-out depth of 8.625 inches and a height of 30.75 inches. Those figures are for the 6-drawer model; we have not confirmed a pull-out depth for the 3-drawer KILBERGET in the table below, so check it before relying on it. Add the pull-out to the dresser's depth and to the room you need to stand in front of it.
This site's list sizes dressers at about three drawers for each person. At the low end, with IKEA prices read on 2026-09-06:
| Dresser | Drawers | Width x depth | IKEA price |
|---|---|---|---|
| KILBERGET | 3 | 33.9 x 16.1 in | $130 |
| BRIMNES | 4 | 30.8 x 18.1 in, 48.9 in tall | $230 |
| STORKLINTA | 6 | 55.1 x 18.9 in | $250 |
| HEMNES | 8 | 63 x 19.6 in | $450 |
One person can work with the 3-drawer KILBERGET. Two people at three drawers each need six, and the STORKLINTA covers that for $120 more than the KILBERGET ($250 − $130 = $120). Moving up to the 8-drawer HEMNES costs $450 − $130 = $320 more than the KILBERGET, and the HEMNES is nearly twice as wide, at 63 inches against 33.9. The BRIMNES trades width for height, which helps where the wall beside the bed is short.
Spending more buys materials and features rather than drawers per dollar. Burrow's Prospect Low, 3 drawers, was $734 on 2026-09-07, and Article's Cooper Double, 6 soft-close drawers, was $999 on 2026-09-07. On this site's list, the dresser range runs from $130 to $2,299.
Anchoring
Tall dressers tip, and a pulled-out drawer shifts their weight forward. CPSC's STURDY page, checked 2026-10-23, says covered clothing storage units manufactured after September 1, 2023 must pass all three of its stability tests and ship with an anti-tip device that meets ASTM F3096. The rule itself is in 16 CFR part 1261.
CPSC's Anchor It! page, checked 2026-10-23, says new furniture such as dressers "are sold with anti-tip devices" and to "install them right away." For furniture you already own, it says pieces "can be anchored with inexpensive anti-tip brackets."
The product pages on this site's list put it differently:
- IKEA KILBERGET: must be wall-anchored, and it opens one drawer at a time until it is
- IKEA STORKLINTA: must be wall-anchored, and the drawers stay locked until it is
- IKEA HEMNES: must be wall-anchored, and wall screws are not included, so budget for screws that suit your wall
- Burrow Prospect Low: anti-tip hardware built into the frame
- Article Lenia Double: anti-tip hardware included, must be wall-anchored
Anchoring usually means drilling into the wall, so, as with a mounted closet system, ask your landlord how they want the holes handled. Rules on what can be charged against a deposit differ by state. This site's cost page adds the bed, dresser and the rest of the apartment together for one to four people.
Closet organizers
A closet organizer uses vertical space you already pay rent for, so it adds storage without taking floor from the bedroom. Its cost depends mostly on whether it stands on the floor, hangs from the existing rod or shelf, or mounts to the wall, on how much of it is drawers rather than open shelves, and on whether someone has to install it.
In a rental, mounting is the part to think through. A unit that screws into the closet wall means holes you may need to patch at move-out, and lease terms on wall fixtures differ, so ask your landlord what is allowed before you buy. For freestanding or rod-hung pieces, confirm any required restraints and the load the existing rod or shelf can support. A second rod may add hanging space for short items, but check the opening and installation requirements before buying. Shelf dividers and hanging shelves hold folded clothes that would otherwise need dresser drawers, which can let you buy a smaller dresser from the table above.
