What do first-time renters regret buying?

Summary

Purchases that are expensive to undo deserve extra care: a sofa whose box will not clear the door, furniture bought before measuring, items with costly returns, and duplicates of what the apartment provides. This is a guide to those risks, rather than a survey of renters' experiences. The cost can be a return fee, shipping you do not get back, or a resale loss. In the worked Burrow example, returning a $1,217 sofa costs about $122 with its packaging and about $243 without, under that store's terms.

Pieces that do not fit

A sofa that arrives and cannot get inside is an expensive regret, and room size is only part of the problem. The box also has to fit through every door, hallway and turn between the street and the living room. Article's delivery help page states the test simply: "Door width should be greater than the box's height." That makes the box height on the product page the number to check against the narrowest door on the route.

Sofa (Article price on this site's list, checked 2026-09-07)Assembled widthShipping boxDoors must be wider than
Burrard 83.5 inch, $1,29983.5 in87 x 37 x 21 in21 in
Timber 90 inch Leather, $1,79990 in91 x 38 x 22 in22 in
Vati 80 inch Sofa Bed, $1,79980 in82 x 39 x 28 in28 in
Sitka 99 inch, $1,59999 in101 x 43 x 25 in25 in

The Vati is the narrowest of the four once it is assembled, but its box is the tallest. A box this long also has to make the turn at the top of the stairs or out of an elevator, and the box height does not show whether it can.

Some sofas avoid the problem by arriving in pieces. On this site's sofa list, IKEA's KIVIK 3-Seat Sofa ($899, checked 2026-09-06) "ships as sections." Burrow's Range 3-Piece Sofa ($1,217, checked 2026-09-07) is "3 modules, no tools." Floyd's Sofa 2.0 Three Seater ($2,190, checked 2026-09-07) comes in "flat-pack boxes" and "comes apart again," which also helps with the next move. Pieces that come apart do not guarantee a fit, but they make the doorway much less of a problem.

Someone also has to carry the piece the last stretch, and the delivery tier sets who. IKEA's delivery page lists Standard Delivery from $29 for non-members ($19 for IKEA Family), Scheduled Doorstep from $39 ($29), and Scheduled In-Home from $69 ($59), all with a minimum $35 merchandise subtotal (checked 2026-10-23). Before choosing the cheapest tier, read where that tier says the crew stops. This site's measuring guide covers the full route, including elevators and stair turns.

Returns that cost money

Once a piece is in the apartment and turns out to be wrong, the store's return policy sets the cost of the mistake. These are the terms on each store's own page, read 2026-10-23.

StoreReturn windowWhat a return costs you
IKEA365 days new and unopened; 180 days openedNot accepted for plants, cut fabric, custom countertops and as-is products
Target365 days (read on a Target product page)—
Best Choice Products60 days—
Article"30 days from the date of delivery"Refund "less any applicable outbound and return shipping fees"; exchanges are listed as "Free exchange"
Crate & Barrel—Shipping fees are not refunded; you pay return shipping and any pickup fees
Burrow—10% of the price with original packaging, 20% without, capped at $250 per item

A percentage fee grows with the price. Take the Burrow Range 3-Piece Sofa at $1,217 on this site's list (checked 2026-09-07). Rounded to whole dollars, sending it back with its packaging gives $1,217 × 10% = about $122 off the refund. Without the packaging, it is $1,217 × 20% = about $243, still under the $250 cap. The difference is whether you kept the boxes, so keep the flattened cartons in a closet for the first few weeks.

An IKEA as-is piece is excluded from its return policy. For a purchase beyond the return window or bought secondhand, confirm the seller's terms before assuming it can go back. If resale is the remaining option, compare what you paid with what someone nearby will pay, and allow for moving it out. Arrange removal of the old piece separately rather than assuming a new delivery includes it.

Buying before living in the space

Buying before move-in can leave you paying for things the apartment already has. Many apartments already have blinds, a built-in shelf or closet storage. Buying a full set of curtains, a bookcase or a dresser before move-in can leave you with duplicates you have to store or return.

Curtains show how easy it is to buy the wrong quantity. Target's Room Essentials sheer panel is 60 in wide by 84 in long and sold singly, as one panel. IKEA's RITVA in the 57 x 118 inch size is sold as one pair (both checked 2026-10-23). Two windows can mean four of one product and two of the other, and an 84-inch panel and a 118-inch panel hang to very different points on the wall. Measure the window and the height of any existing rod first. IKEA lists the BOTAREN shower tension rod at $12.99 (checked 2026-10-23); ask IKEA about its suitability before treating it as a window-curtain fitting.

Seating is easy to overbuy too. This site's sofa list runs from $150 to $11,000 across 20 options (checked 2026-09-06), and it sizes them with a plain rule: "One seat each, plus one for a guest." For a room you have not measured yet, Best Choice Products' Faux Leather Futon Sofa Bed is $150 on this site's list (checked 2026-09-25). At 65.25 in wide, it is narrower than any of the Article sofas in the table above, and it comes in a box you assemble. A chaise sectional is worth a second look before buying for a small room. IKEA's KIVIK Sofa with Chaise is 110.3 in wide ($1,349 on this site's list, checked 2026-09-06), so compare that width with the wall you plan to put it on.

Arrange assembly and anchoring

The delivery order also needs to cover who will put the furniture together and fit any required restraints. IKEA's assembly page lists a $52 fee, says the work is done by an "independent contractor," and states that assembly "includes installation of any tip-over restraints for safety purposes" (checked 2026-10-23). Article's delivery page says its teams "will not install items that could permanently alter the home, such as anti-tip hardware or wall attachments." CPSC tells households to anchor TVs that are not wall mounted. In a rental, ask the landlord before drilling, because lease terms on wall anchors vary.

Smaller purchases can wait until you have lived in the room and know what is missing. This site's cost page adds up a full apartment for one to four people, and the lists show each piece with its store and the date its price was read.
