Do you need your own washer and dryer in an apartment, and what does a stackable or compact pair cost?

Summary

One white LG washer, electric dryer and stacking-kit bundle was $1,538.99 at Designer Appliances, checked 2026-11-01. Selecting the displayed stacked installation, removal and installation-kit options brings the illustration to about $1,905 before tax and address-specific charges. It is not an installed quote for your apartment. LG's specification sheet identifies that matching dryer and stacking kit. Confirm the building's connections, lease permission and the retailer's service eligibility before ordering. Electricity is a separate annual expense, estimated below from household use rather than measurements of that bundle.

Check the lease and the hookups first

A lease that is silent on appliances is not the same as a lease that allows them. Many leases restrict anything connected to the building's water lines, because a failed hose or drain can damage the unit below. Before you price machines, find the clause that covers appliances or alterations. If the clause is unclear, ask the landlord in writing whether you may install a washer and dryer, who is responsible for water damage, and whether you must remove the machines when you move out.

Compare the model's installation instructions with the water supply, drain, power and any outside vent available in the apartment. Have the landlord or installer confirm which connections can be used before ordering. If the space lacks a connection a model requires, ask about a compatible arrangement rather than assuming a portable machine or an all-in-one is permitted there.

If you move to an apartment without hookups, you will need to sell the pair, store it or pay someone to take it away. That cost belongs in the decision from the start, along with the purchase price.

Stackable, compact or all-in-one

The choice is between separate machines that stack, a smaller pair, and a single drum that does both jobs:

  • A full-size stackable pair has a washer with a matching dryer mounted on top. Confirm that the models can be stacked, which stacking kit they require, and the water, drain, power and venting arrangements before buying.
  • A compact pair uses smaller machines and takes fewer clothes per load. Whether it can be stacked depends on the models.
  • An all-in-one unit washes and dries in the same drum without moving the load. Whether a given unit needs an outside vent depends on the model, so check that before you buy.

ENERGY STAR sets size lines for both machines. Only front-loading and top-loading washers with capacities "greater than 1.6ft3" are eligible for its certification. For dryers, it certifies both "Standard-size (4.4 cubic feet or greater) and compact (less than 4.4 cubic feet)" models. A compact dryer can therefore carry the label. ENERGY STAR says certified washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than regular washers. For a certified dryer, it gives an example of $210 saved on energy bills over the product's life. These are ENERGY STAR's figures, read 2026-10-23.

On the safety side, ENERGY STAR's dryer page says to clean the lint filter after every load, calling it "an important safety measure."

Price both machines and the stacking kit together; installation parts may still be a separate line on the quote.

Designer Appliances listed one specific white LG bundle at $1,538.99, checked 2026-11-01: WM3400CW washer, DLE3400W electric dryer and KSTK4 stacking kit. LG's US product pages identify the washer as 4.5 cu ft and the dryer as 7.4 cu ft; LG's WM3400CW specification sheet, revised 2023-06-26 and checked 2026-11-01, names DLE3400W as the matching electric dryer and KSTK4 as the stacking kit. For an apartment that permits a full-size electric pair and has the required connections, this LG bundle is a concrete option to price with installation. Confirm the service area before building a budget around that retailer's offer.

The same LG sheet gives the washer's dimensions as 27 inches wide, 39 inches high and 30 1/4 inches deep, with 55 inches of depth when its door is open. Those are washer measurements, not the clearance required for the stacked pair. Have the installer check the complete installation instructions against your closet, door opening, hookups and vent route before ordering.

The retailer displayed optional stacked installation using existing hookups at $199, removal of the old washer and dryer at $98, and a deluxe installation kit at $69.49. With all three selected, the rounded illustration is $1,539 + $199 + $98 + $69 = about $1,905 before tax and any address-specific charges. These are listed options, not proof that all are required or that every apartment qualifies. Confirm the service area, delivery charge, required parts, venting, power and lease permission for your address; a delivery banner is not an installed quote for that apartment.

What delivery and installation add

Each store's appliance page describes its delivery and installation terms differently. The checked date for each figure below is 2026-10-23.

StoreHaul-away of old machines
Home DepotOffered "for an additional charge"
Lowe's$50 with delivery of a new appliance; free for select MyLowe's Pro Rewards members
Best Buy$49.99 with a replacement product delivered by Geek Squad or Best Buy Home Delivery; $199.99 standalone for up to 2 large products

Home Depot says its delivery cost "varies by zip code," and it offers installation, with delivery cost applied in the cart. Ask for a delivery and installation quote for your address. Best Buy's $199.99 standalone haul-away price covers up to 2 large products, while its $49.99 service accompanies delivery of a replacement by Geek Squad or Best Buy Home Delivery. If you expect to remove the machines at move-out without buying replacements, confirm the standalone service for your address.

Best Buy's return window for most products is 15 days, or 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members. It "starts the day you receive the product," and items must come back like-new with accessories and packaging. Major appliances "cannot be returned by mail," and Best Buy directs customers to call 1-888-BEST BUY for return and pickup options.

Keep the boxes until you know the pair fits the closet. Before ordering, ask Best Buy which return window applies to the specific washer and dryer, rather than assuming the general membership windows settle that question.

Best Buy's price match covers identical new products from its qualified competitors, a list to check before you count on a match, and it excludes marketplace, clearance, refurbished and open-box items. It excludes delivery and installation service prices, so a matched machine price does not lower those charges.

For setup costs elsewhere in the apartment, this site's cost page shows how each piece adds up.

What it costs to run

This site estimates annual electricity use from household size and multiplies it by $0.1834 per kWh. That rate is the US average residential price from EIA Electric Power Monthly table 5.3 for June 2026. These are this site's estimates, not measured readings from a specific machine.

HouseholdWasher kWh/yearWasher cost/year (rounded)Dryer kWh/yearDryer cost/year (rounded)
1 person100100 × $0.1834 = about $18600600 × $0.1834 = about $110
4+ people190190 × $0.1834 = about $351,1001,100 × $0.1834 = about $202

Using the whole-dollar estimates, one person's pair comes to $18 + $110 = about $128 a year. For four or more, it comes to $35 + $202 = about $237. Under these assumptions, the dryer accounts for most of the total, so its efficiency and the number of loads you dry deserve attention when comparing machines.

EIA's table 5.3 showed 18.31 cents per kilowatthour when read on 2026-10-23, or 0.03 cents below the $0.1834 used here. The readings have not been established as the same month; use your own utility rate for a bill estimate. Water, detergent and any building fee for laundry hookups are outside this electricity calculation.
