What size rug does an apartment living room need, and what does each size cost?

Summary

A loveseat with a coffee table usually needs a 5x7. A full three-seat sofa usually needs an 8x10, so its front legs can rest on the rug. On this site's list, a 5x7 starts at $30 (IKEA TIPHEDE, checked 2026-09-06), and an 8x10 starts at $230 (IKEA STOENSE, same date). The four 100% wool 8x10s on the list run from $599 to $2,899. To choose, compare the sofa's width with the rug's long side. Most shops on the list also recommend a pad, which costs extra.

Which size goes with which sofa

This site's rug list says a rug should be "big enough to reach under the sofa." In practice, that means the rug's long side has to be longer than the sofa is wide. Go by the measurements, not the size name: the 5x7s on this site's list have long sides of 87, 91 and 94 inches.

IKEA's KLIPPAN loveseat is 70.9 inches wide (IKEA, checked 2026-09-06). The TIPHEDE 5x7 measures 5 ft 1 in x 7 ft 3 in, and 7 ft 3 in = 87 in. 87 − 70.9 = 16.1, so the rug's long side is about 16 inches longer than the loveseat. Centered, that is about 8 inches beyond each end of the loveseat, which this site judges enough for the front legs. Burrow's Range 2-Piece Sofa is 62 inches wide (Burrow, checked 2026-09-07) and fits a 5x7 with even more room.

Smaller rugs start to run short with a three-seater. IKEA's KIVIK 3-Seat Sofa is 89.8 inches wide (IKEA, checked 2026-09-06), and this is how it compares with the long side of each rug on the list:

RugSize as soldLong sideKIVIK at 89.8 in
IKEA TIPHEDE 5x75 ft 1 in x 7 ft 3 in87 inShorter than the sofa
IKEA ARENDE 5x75 ft 3 in x 7 ft 7 in7 × 12 + 7 = 91 inAbout an inch longer
IKEA STOENSE 5x75 ft 7 in x 7 ft 10 in7 × 12 + 10 = 94 inAbout 4 in longer
IKEA STOENSE 8x107 ft 10 in x 10 ft120 inAbout 30 in longer
Revival Rugs Shell 9x129 ft 2 in x 12 ft 2 in12 × 12 + 2 = 146 inAbout 56 in longer

The two larger 5x7s are longer than the KIVIK only by an inch or four, too little, in this site's judgment, to show past the arms. The 8x10 is the first size on the list with a long side about 30 inches longer than the sofa. Check the depth and the positions of the coffee table and chair before deciding how much of the seating area it will cover.

For a loveseat like the KLIPPAN, start with IKEA's $30 TIPHEDE 5x7, checked 2026-09-06: its long side clears the loveseat's width in this comparison. For a KIVIK-size three-seater, compare the $230 STOENSE 8x10 from the same dated list instead. Tape out the depth before choosing; those width margins do not settle where the other furniture goes.

Other sofa widths on this site's sofa list help place your own sofa:

  • Article's Vati 80 inch Sofa Bed is 80 in wide.
  • Article's Burrard is 83.5 in wide.
  • Article's Sitka is 99 in wide.

The Article sofas were checked on 2026-09-07. IKEA's KIVIK Sofa with Chaise is 110.3 in wide (checked 2026-09-06), which is close to the 8x10's 120-inch side. For a sofa that size, this site would look at the 9x12.

The STOENSE shows the cost of going up one size with everything else held equal: $230 − $130 = $100 more for the 8x10.

The prices also vary considerably among materials and constructions at the same size. Article's Clyde Wool 8x10 costs $699, about three times the STOENSE 8x10 ($230 × 3 = $690). The hand-knotted 100% wool rugs at Crate & Barrel and Room & Board cost more than ten times as much ($230 × 10 = $2,300).

If you expect to move again within a year or two, a cheaper rug may make sense: the 8x10 that fits this room may not suit the next one.

Cleaning, pile and the cost of a pad

IKEA's cotton TIPHEDE is machine washable. The two IKEA polypropylene rugs, ARENDE and STOENSE, are marked "do not wash."

Revival Rugs lists its Shell 9x12 as machine washable. Article's Ouma Washable Wool also says machine washable, but notes that the 8x10 size needs a commercial washer. In practice, that means a laundromat or a rug cleaner, not the washer in your unit.

Article's Eva and Clyde and Crate & Barrel's Turin, Prato and Lisse are listed as spot clean, so a spill on one of these has to be handled in place.

In a small room, pile height affects the door and the sofa legs. A 1.25-inch pile like the ARENDE is the deepest pile on the list, while a low pile sits flatter; the STOENSE is 0.5 in and the Kayseri 0.25 in.

IKEA says to use an anti-slip underlay with the TIPHEDE, and it lists one as needed for the ARENDE and STOENSE. Article and Crate & Barrel recommend a pad for every rug of theirs on the list. Revival Rugs says one is needed. Room & Board recommends one on hard floors.

IKEA's STOPP FILT underlay costs $14.99 in 5 ft 5 in x 7 ft 9 in, and $19.99 in 6 ft 3 in x 9 ft 2 in, its largest size (IKEA, checked 2026-10-23). The larger pad is smaller than an 8x10 rug, so it is the closest match rather than an exact fit. For a whole-dollar budget, allow $20 for the larger pad and $15 for the smaller one. The STOENSE 8x10 and pad then come to $230 + $20 = about $250; the STOENSE 5x7 and pad come to $130 + $15 = about $145.

Include the pad when comparing the rug with the rest of your whole-apartment budget on this site's cost page.
