What kind of dresser fits beside the bed in a small bedroom?

Summary

Look at the drawer pull-out before the dresser's depth. IKEA's HEMNES 8-drawer is 19 5/8 inches deep, and its drawers come out another 9 7/8, so the gap between it and the bed has to be close to 10 inches before a drawer opens fully. A tall, narrow dresser such as BRIMNES stores more per square foot of floor, and every one of these has to be anchored to the wall.

Drawer pull-out decides whether it fits

IKEA lists a "drawer pull-out" figure on each dresser page, and it is the number that tells you whether the thing works next to a bed. On the three IKEA dressers on this site's list:

  • BRIMNES 4-drawer: 30 3/4 wide, 18 1/8 deep, 48 7/8 tall; drawers pull out 7 3/4 inches.
  • STORKLINTA 6-drawer: 55 1/8 wide, 18 7/8 deep, 29 1/2 tall; drawers pull out 10 7/8 inches.
  • HEMNES 8-drawer: 63 wide, 19 5/8 deep, 37 3/4 tall; drawers pull out 9 7/8 inches.

With a drawer open, STORKLINTA reaches 29 3/4 inches into the room and HEMNES 29 1/2. You also need somewhere to stand while you pull it.

Tall and narrow holds more per square foot

Divide storage by floor area and BRIMNES wins easily. It holds 6.4 cubic feet on about 3.9 square feet of floor, roughly 1.65 cubic feet for every square foot it covers. HEMNES holds 9.5 cubic feet but covers about 8.6 square feet, about 1.1 per square foot. STORKLINTA lands at about 1.16. What the wide ones give you instead is a top for a lamp or a mirror. STORKLINTA is also the lowest of the three at 29 1/2 inches.

The other way to get storage into a small bedroom is to put it in the bed. Crate & Barrel's Lafayette queen storage bed measures 72.5 by 84.5 inches and has three drawers, one on each side and one at the foot. The shop says the side drawers open with just enough clearance to avoid hitting nightstands. The foot drawer needs its own clear floor at the end of the bed.

What the federal rule covers, and drawers that stay shut

Clothing storage units made after September 1, 2023 have to meet the stability requirements in 16 CFR 1261, the rule that came out of the STURDY Act. It covers freestanding units 27 inches or taller, 30 pounds or heavier, with 3.2 cubic feet or more of enclosed storage, and CPSC counts fabric dressers with drawers. The tests include hanging a 60 pound weight on the open drawer most likely to tip the unit, and loading the storage with 8.5 pounds per cubic foot. The rule exists to protect children up to 72 months old, and an ASTM F3096 anti-tip device has to come in the box.

IKEA's pages for all three carry the same warning: "this product must be securely anchored." STORKLINTA opens one drawer at a time until it is fixed to the wall, which IKEA says reduces the tip-over risk but does not remove it. HEMNES also opens one drawer at a time, and IKEA tells you to use screws and plugs suited to the walls in your home. Burrow says its Prospect Low dresser has the anti-tip hardware built into the frame.
