The generator is only one line on the budget

A working system may also need a control, steam head, water connection, steam line, drain or automatic flush components, and a dedicated electrical circuit. If you choose upgraded controls, lighting, audio, aromatherapy, or a coordinated shower system, the equipment total rises quickly.
Before comparing quotes, ask for the steam equipment as one line item and the bathroom work as separate line items. That makes it much easier to see where the money is going.
An existing shower can save money, but only if it is truly reusable
A conversion is attractive because the shower is already there. The question is how much of it can remain.
A steam shower needs a fully enclosed space and a wall-and-ceiling assembly suitable for repeated steam exposure. If the existing shower has an open top, partial glass, unsuitable waterproofing, or no ceiling, the job can turn into a rebuild.
That is why two bathrooms of the same size can produce very different quotes. One may need a generator, glass changes, and rough-in work. The other may need new waterproofing, tile, ceiling work, electrical work, plumbing, and glass before steam equipment can even be installed.
Glass, tile, and waterproofing can cost more than expected
In a steam shower, custom glass is part of the enclosure, not only a finish. Tile and stone also affect labor, and the waterproofing behind the finish is more important than the visible surface.
Natural stone can push the generator up a size with brands that factor finish materials into sizing, and a larger generator can change the electrical requirements.
For that reason, do not price the steam system before the room design is reasonably settled.
Get one drawing priced by every trade
The cleanest way to compare bids is to give the electrician, plumber, tile contractor, glass contractor, and steam installer the same plan and the same selected generator.
Ask what each quote includes and excludes. Delivery, demolition, permits, waterproofing, glass, generator drainage, electrical disconnects, finish repair, and commissioning are easy places for assumptions to differ.
