When do sauna heater elements and stones need replacing, and what do they cost?

Published

Summary

Sauna stones are rearranged and replaced on the heater maker's hour-based schedule. Electric heating elements are replaced when they are damaged or stop heating properly, not on a fixed calendar. HUUM ties its stone care to hours of use, and Almost Heaven lists a replacement element for its 8.0kW KIP heater at $140 on its store, checked 2026-10-23. Your heater's model number and manual determine which schedule applies and which part fits. The maker or its dealer prices that part.

Stones: why and when

Stones sit in the heater and are heated and cooled every time the sauna runs, and heater makers treat them as a service item rather than a permanent part.

HUUM's FAQ and warranty page gives a schedule counted in hours of use:

  • Inspect the stones after 100 hours, or at least once a year
  • After 200 hours, rearrange the stones and replace any cracked ones
  • After 400 hours, replace all of the stones

The yearly inspection still matters if a lightly used heater takes a long time to reach 100 hours. An hour threshold does not mean visibly damaged stones should stay in place until that number is reached.

HUUM's schedule is written for HUUM heaters. If you own another brand, use the stone guidance in that heater's manual. Use the stone type and quantity the maker specifies for your model, because stone loads differ between heaters.

Count heater operating time, including warm-up, rather than only the time spent sitting inside. A rough log, or a runtime display if the control provides one, makes HUUM's 100, 200 and 400 hour marks easier to plan around. Keep the yearly inspection on the calendar even when use is light.

Elements: signs of failure

Elements are not on a schedule. HUUM's FAQ says they need replacing only when they are broken, and Almost Heaven's heater element FAQ describes signs to watch for rather than an interval.

Almost Heaven's heater element FAQ lists these signs that elements may need replacing:

  • Visible damage on an element, such as cracks, bends or bubbling
  • Uneven heating, or other performance problems with the heater

Treat those symptoms as reasons to ask the maker or its service network for a diagnosis, rather than proof that a particular element has failed. Before ordering, provide the heater model and a description of the problem. Ask which photographs can be taken with the heater cool and isolated from power.

HUUM lists an element failing to turn red as a possible failure sign. Leave live testing to a qualified service professional; do not remove stones or expose wiring while the heater is operating. Age alone is not HUUM's replacement criterion.

Looking is as far as an owner should go. Replacing an element means working on the heater's wiring and its dedicated circuit, which is a job for a qualified electrician or the maker's service network, with the power off at the breaker. If uneven heat has another cause, such as a control or sensor fault, a diagnosis from the maker or dealer can prevent you from buying an element you do not need.

What the parts cost

Replacement elements are sold by heater model and output. A part listed for one kilowatt rating is not interchangeable with another just because the brand is the same.

Almost Heaven's replacement heater elements page shows the following, checked 2026-10-23:

  • 8.0kW KIP heating element: listed at $140, with "Regular price $105.00" shown struck through on the same page
  • 4.5kW and 6.0kW variants: shown as unavailable

The crossed-out amount is lower than the listed price, so confirm the selected part and payable amount with Almost Heaven. Do not treat the display as a verified discount.

If a service diagnosis calls for the compatible 8.0kW KIP element, consider Almost Heaven's listed part at $140 on its store, checked 2026-10-23, after confirming the heater model and part number with the seller. The price covers the part, excluding labor, tax and shipping. It should not be applied to another heater size.

For a stone-price example, Almost Heaven's Standard Sauna Stones 40lbs were listed at $135 on its store, checked 2026-11-02. That is one box, not a complete stone load for every heater. Ask the heater maker which stone type, size and total quantity apply. A HUUM owner should use HUUM's approved stone specification and dealer guidance, rather than assuming the KIP element or this box is suitable.

Routine replacements versus repairs

Keep stone purchases and element repairs on separate budget lines. The stone schedule follows use, while an element purchase depends on a diagnosed failure. Record the last stone inspection and heater hours so the next service conversation can start with the model's condition and history. An estimate for an element replacement should identify the part and labor separately, rather than treating a store price as the total repair bill.
