Heaters and cost

How do you clean and maintain a home sauna, and what does upkeep cost each year?

Published

Summary

Clean the wood and floor according to the cabin maker's instructions, let the room dry, and track heater hours for stone care. There is no single yearly upkeep bill: supplies recur, stones follow the heater's schedule, and elements are replaced after failure. As price examples, Almost Heaven lists a 40lb box of Standard Sauna Stones at $135, checked 2026-11-02, and its exterior stain was $284 per 2.5L bucket, checked 2026-10-23. Neither purchase automatically belongs in every year's budget.

After every session

Finnleo asks owners to lightly brush benches, walls and backrests with plain water after use. Almost Heaven recommends sitting on a towel to reduce staining. For drying, Finnleo says to prop up the duckboards and leave the door open after cleaning; Almost Heaven also advises wiping wet spots and airing its sauna. Keep the drying routine tied to your cabin's instructions.

By interval, the makers' guidance comes to this:

  • After each use: brush benches, walls and backrests with plain water (Finnleo); sit on a towel (Almost Heaven)
  • Periodically: vacuum or sweep the floor and inspect for mildew, cleaning it where found (Almost Heaven); wet-mop the floor "occasionally" with a deodorizing cleaner (Finnleo)
  • Every 100 heater hours, or at least once a year: inspect the stones (HUUM)
  • Every 200 heater hours: rearrange the stones and replace cracked ones (HUUM)
  • Every 400 heater hours: replace all the stones (HUUM)
  • Yearly: sand the benches (Almost Heaven; Finnleo says "about once per year"); inspect stones for cracking (Almost Heaven)

Benches, walls and floor

When plain water is not enough, Finnleo recommends treating dirt or sweat stains with a hand brush and warm water mixed with a mild detergent. For the floor, it suggests wet-mopping occasionally with a liquid deodorizing cleaner and names Lysol and Pine-Sol as examples.

Sanding is the yearly job that restores the bench surface. Both Finnleo and Almost Heaven put it at roughly once a year, and Finnleo describes it as light sanding, so the aim is to refresh the surface rather than remove much wood.

For Almost Heaven cabins, follow its instruction: "Never stain or varnish the interior of a sauna." Exterior wood finish is a separate product and job. If another cabin has a factory treatment or its own care product, follow that maker's directions instead of assuming every interior requires the same treatment.

Almost Heaven also advises against placing a sauna directly on hardwood or carpet and points to water-resistant surfaces such as tile, concrete or laminate. Choosing one of those makes sweeping and mopping straightforward and keeps water off flooring that would be damaged by it.

Stones and the heater

The hour-based schedule above is HUUM's guidance for its heaters. Almost Heaven instead asks owners to inspect stones annually and periodically for cracking, replacing them as needed. A session log helps you reach the right maintenance interval without treating one brand's schedule as a rule for every heater.

Heating elements are a repair cost. HUUM says to replace them only when broken, while Almost Heaven lists cracks, bends, bubbling and uneven heating as possible failure signs. Have the maker or its service network diagnose the problem before ordering. Any live testing belongs with a qualified professional; do not remove stones or expose wiring while the heater is operating.

Almost Heaven listed an 8.0kW KIP heating element at $140 on its store, checked 2026-10-23. A lower $105 figure was crossed out, so confirm the selected part and payable price before ordering. The 4.5kW and 6.0kW variants were marked unavailable that day. That $140 example applies to the specified 8.0kW KIP part; a different heater needs its own approved element.

Outdoor saunas: the exterior

A backyard sauna adds weather to the list. Almost Heaven's outdoor guidance covers vacuuming and washing the exterior periodically at low pressure. Rinse the interior with water only, never with a power washer. The guidance also covers tightening the staves, wiping wet spots, and running the heater after rainfall.

Almost Heaven suggests cover options for saunas under trees, in wet climates or where weather swings are extreme. Its fitted rain jacket can stay on during use, while a general tarp must come off. The winter guidance says the jacket is not compatible with a wood-burning sauna chimney. For a chimney-equipped cabin, ask the sauna and flue makers which roof arrangement is approved rather than assuming shingles or an awning can be added without checking clearances.

Building an annual upkeep budget

Keep routine supplies separate from purchases that depend on wear, failure or an outdoor finish job:

  • Exterior stain for outdoor units: $284 per 2.5L bucket of Almost Heaven's exterior wood stain, checked 2026-10-23
  • Replacement element, only after one fails: $140 for Almost Heaven's 8.0kW KIP element, checked 2026-10-23
  • Replacement sauna stones: Almost Heaven Standard Sauna Stones, 40lbs, listed at $135 on Almost Heaven's store, checked 2026-11-02. Confirm the stone type, size and total quantity your heater requires.
  • Mild detergent and a deodorizing floor cleaner
  • Sandpaper for bench sanding

If your heater specifies stones compatible with Almost Heaven's 40lb Standard box, use its $135 price on Almost Heaven's store, checked 2026-11-02, as one purchase unit in the replacement budget. Ask the heater maker how many boxes are needed. Add local supply prices and any service quote separately; the $140 element is a possible repair for a compatible KIP heater, not an annual subscription.
