What Does a Backyard Sauna Need Underneath It?

A backyard sauna needs a solid, flat, level base that supports the complete structure. Depending on the model, that may be a concrete pad, pavers, or another approved platform. The base is only part of the site work: water still needs to drain away, pad thickness and anchoring follow local code, utilities may need to pass underneath, and the sauna still has to meet the clearances and setback rules for its location.

Start with the sauna manual, not a generic patio plan

Outdoor sauna manufacturers do not all call for the same foundation. Finnleo's Euro outdoor manual, for example, asks for a solid, flat, level surface that supports the weight of the room and its maximum number of occupants, and recommends a flat, level concrete pad, or an equivalent platform, that supports the entire floor area.

Another sauna may call for a slab, deck, pier system, or a different prepared base. The product's installation instructions should come before a general backyard rule.

Keep runoff away from the structure

The support under the sauna may need to be level, but the surrounding yard should not trap water against it. Grade and drainage should move rain and runoff away from the wood base and from underneath the structure. Almost Heaven's site-prep guide says to avoid areas prone to standing water, and Finnleo gives the option of caulking between the base rails and walls to keep rain, snow, and condensation out.

Local code sets the pad thickness and anchoring

Finnleo leaves the thickness of the concrete pad to local building codes. It also recommends anchoring the outdoor room securely, with the anchoring method and materials again taken from local code, and the base rail is anchored to the pad or platform it rests on.

Those details depend on the local soil and climate, so a base copied from another region may not meet them.

Plan power before the concrete goes in

If conduit or another utility needs to reach the sauna, decide the route before the base is finished. It is much easier to plan a clean underground path at the beginning than to add exposed conduit around a completed patio later. Almost Heaven lists the distance from the sauna to the home's electrical panel as one of the things that changes the installation cost, and says all electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician.

Leave room around the sauna as well as under it

The base has to sit in a location that already accounts for required clearances. Outdoor sauna manuals may specify separation from structures or vegetation, and local setback rules can add more space.

Mark those distances before the foundation is placed. Almost Heaven also asks for space around the sauna for air circulation.
